After the battle

After operation Market Garden ended in failure, the area on the north of the Lower Rhine was still occupied by German forces. The allies held the south bank. Arnhem was the frontline untill it was liberated in april 1945.

Epilogue

After the Battle of Arnhem, there was only one person who thought Market Garden was a success. Montgomery stated that Operation Market Garden was a 90 percent success. After all, the Allies had managed to conquer 90 percent of the road to Arnhem.

When Prince Bernhard heard this, he reportedly declared: “My country cannot afford another of Montgomery’s successes…”
